American Gothic is a 1930 painting by American Regionalist artist Grant Wood, intended to convey the strength and perseverance of rural American life with it's hard realism style. It was the subject of some controversy upon its first exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago, where some praised the depiction of a hardworking American family while others criticized it as a malicious caricature of the Midwest.
